Using Amino Acid Therapy For Narcissistic Abuse Recovery

What if you could feel better between therapy sessions—not just during them?

When you've been through narcissistic abuse, it can feel as though your own brain and nervous system have turned against you.

You may understand intellectually that you're safe.

But your body doesn't always agree.

You may be dealing with anxiety, panic, depression, disrupted sleep, intrusive thoughts, anger, emotional overwhelm, flashbacks, or an urge to numb or self-medicate.

And when you're struggling that intensely, waiting a week between therapy sessions can feel like a very long time.

This is one of the reasons I incorporate amino acid therapy into my work with some clients.

Amino acid therapy is one part of my broader approach to narcissistic abuse recovery.

Your Brain and Nervous System Need Support, Too

Amino acids are the building blocks your body uses to make many of the neurotransmitters involved in mood, stress, sleep, focus, and emotional regulation.

My approach to amino acid therapy is influenced particularly by the work of Joan Mathews Larson, PhD and Julia Ross, MFT, two pioneers in bringing nutritional and amino-acid approaches into the mental health and addiction treatment world. I also trained with the extraordinary mental health nutritionist, Christina Veselak.

Their work helped establish a framework for using specific amino acids, in individualized combinations and doses, to support neurotransmitter function and address symptoms associated with emotional and behavioral distress.

I have incorporated this approach into my work because I have seen how powerful it can be when clients have additional support between therapy sessions.

Why Amino Acid Therapy Can Be So Helpful After Narcissistic Abuse

Narcissistic abuse can leave you feeling like a hostage in your own life.

You may have spent years adapting yourself around another person's moods, demands, manipulation, or control.

You may have lost trust in your own judgment.

You may feel as though your emotions are running the show and frankly, sometimes they are.

Along with participating in therapy, my experience has been that the amino acids help people feel far more in control of the emotions and state of mind.

We identify the symptoms you're experiencing and systematically explore which amino acids may be most helpful for you.

You become part of the process of figuring out what your brain and body need.

That can be incredibly empowering after a relationship in which so much of your power was taken away.

What Can We Work On?

Depending on your individual needs, amino acid therapy may be incorporated into treatment when you're experiencing symptoms such as:

anxiety

panic attacks

depressed mood

sleep difficulties

intrusive thoughts

emotional overwhelm

anger or irritability

difficulty regulating your emotions

trauma-related symptoms

flashbacks

cravings or urges to self-medicate

difficulty calming your nervous system

There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Amino Acid Protocol

I don't give every client the same supplements at the same doses.

Your symptoms, your response, and your individual needs matter.

I work with you to trial individual amino acids and determine how you respond, gradually developing an individualized combination and dosage protocol.

We pay attention to what changes.

What improves?

What doesn't?

How do you feel?

What happens when we adjust the dose?

The goal is to find the combination that is appropriate for you, rather than simply handing you a standard list of supplements.

The Power of Feeling Better Between Sessions

One of the things I love about this approach is that your healing doesn't have to stop when your therapy session ends.

We may spend an hour together in therapy working through trauma, EMDR, patterns, beliefs, and experiences.

But what happens when you leave the Zoom call?

You still have to live your life.

You still have to sleep.

You still have to deal with triggers.

You still have to navigate relationships, work, parenting, divorce, custody, and everything else life is asking of you.

Also, remember that I am available via text throughout the first couple of weeks to help you, including, if needed, adjusting your amino acid protocol.

Amino Acid Therapy and EMDR

This is particularly relevant when we are using EMDR.

I often prefer clients who are using amino acid therapy to take their individualized protocol approximately 30–60 minutes before an EMDR session.

My goal is for you to come into session feeling as safe, calm, and grounded as possible.

When you're already feeling more settled, you may be able to engage in the EMDR process without having to work as hard to regulate yourself at the same time.

It's about giving your brain and nervous system the support they need so that you can participate more fully in the work.

Taking Your Power Back

There is something particularly meaningful about this work for survivors of narcissistic abuse.

For so long, someone else may have dictated how you felt.

What you thought.

What you were allowed to need.

What you were allowed to say.

Whether you were "too sensitive."

Whether your perception was trustworthy.

Whether you were safe.

But learning how to understand your own symptoms, observe your own responses, and participate actively in your own healing can begin to shift something very important:

You are no longer powerless.

You are learning how to listen to yourself.

You are learning what helps you feel better.

You are learning what your body is telling you.

And little by little, you're putting the power back where it belongs.

With you.
